Our story

The pain

Adam
Back in 2013 Claimer's founder, Adam, was running a tech-focused media company and was recommended a R&D consultancy. The consultant's website had lots of stock images of happy people and promises of high success rates, but no pricing.

So he called them. After an hour introduction, he negotiated them down from 25% to 20% of the claim's value, but had to commit to 2 years. After signing the contract, he was looking forward to them taking care of everything.

But the whole process was admin heavy and time consuming. Despite having the company's financial data in Xero, the team spent hours messing around with large spreadsheet templates, alongside countless emails and phone calls. The company's lead engineer, who's was on an eye-watering salary, ended up spending a day of his time on calls and filling in Word documents.

After 5 weeks of getting everything together, and chasing the consultancy a few times, the claim was finally submitted. Everyone was pleased when the money came in, but the bill being such a huge chunk of our incentive seemed wrong.

Fixing a broken industry

After having sold the media company, Adam wanted a fresh challenge. Unbelievably, he found that the R&D tax relief industry had not changed at all. In fact it was even worse, with spammy ambulance chaser style sales tactics, 5 year lock-in contracts, and massive uncapped fees.

It was time to fix it. The mission was simple: make claiming R&D tax credits quick, simple, and inexpensive. As a software engineer, Adam knew that the current process could be drastically improved with technology - both for the client and provider.

After a few months of development, Adam launched a proof-of-concept R&D tax web application and got some promising traction. He then teamed up with Ben, a talented accountant and tax specialist, and Andrew, who had run engineering teams at eBay and was now working with startups.
Claimer's war room in 2019, after a late night of brainstorming.
The team locked themselves in a room, and with the helpful advice of an ex-HMRC tax inspector, worked out the optimal flows and complex edge cases for a better R&D claims process. Finally, after a gruelling 2 months, the team had done it - they had streamlined the process by a factor of 10 whilst lowering our overheads - savings that we could pass on to the client.

Claimer was born!

Claimer today

In just the last 18 months, more than 200 businesses have trusted us with their R&D claims, recovering millions of pounds of R&D relief. The company is growing fast, but we still have a long way to go to fix the industry.

We're a member of HMRC's R&D Consultative Committee and continue to consult with ex-HMRC tax inspectors as we invest heavily to improve Claimer's service and technology. Naturally, we use our own service to claim R&D relief on that investment!

The company is back by some prominent venture capital and angel investors, and our talented team of tax, technical, and engineering experts continues to expand.

Claimer has ambitious plans for the future - why not join us?
